What the numbers mean
A loan calculator is only useful if you know what it shows. Here are the three figures that matter, and a few things that are done differently in Switzerland than in the UK, the US or India.
Why two instalments?
The rate you get depends on your income, your permit, other loans and the term. The bank only knows all of that after checking your file. So we show the instalment at 4.95% and at 9.95%. Your offer will be somewhere in between.
What the effective annual rate includes
In Switzerland the effective annual rate includes all costs of the loan. There are no arrangement fees on top, and the legal maximum is 10%. That makes it the right figure for comparing offers.
Choosing the term
A longer term makes each instalment smaller but costs more interest overall. A good rule: take the shortest term with an instalment you can pay comfortably every month, even in a month with a dentist bill or a flight home. Not sure what fits? The budget check shows your room.
With a B permit, some banks limit the term to the validity of your permit. If your permit runs for two more years, a 24 month term is often easier to get approved than 60 months.
Car loan or leasing?
Many people in Switzerland lease their car. With a personal loan, the car is yours from day one, you can sell it whenever you like and there is no mileage limit. A lease can have a lower monthly payment but ties you to the contract. Run the calculator with the car price and compare it with the lease offer from your dealer.
Questions
About the loan calculator
How accurate is the calculator?
It calculates the way banks do: with the effective annual rate and equal monthly instalments. The result is still a guide. What counts is the figure in your loan contract.
Which rate will I get?
That depends on your budget, the amount, the term and your other commitments. A permanent job, few other loans and no debt enforcement usually lead to a lower rate.
Do I have to register or give my email?
No. The calculator works in your browser and nothing is sent to us. Only if you send a request do we receive your details.
Can I lower the instalment later?
Usually only with a new term or by replacing the loan with a new one. You may always repay early, in part or in full (Art. 17 KKG). See debt consolidation for how replacing a loan works.
Happy with the instalment?
Send your request with these figures. Free of charge and without obligation.
Legal notice: Granting credit is prohibited if it leads to the consumer's over-indebtedness (Art. 3 UWG). Example calculation: Loan amount CHF 10’000, term 12 months, effective annual interest rate between 4.95 % and 9.95 %, total interest cost between CHF 264.16 and CHF 523.31. Terms from 6 to 120 months. The interest rate depends on creditworthiness.
